Name: Spruce Tree Campground
Spruce Tree Campground is at the end of the road on the St Joe River. The area is fairly rough and covered with a mature forest. The campground allows for horsemen to unload and head up the trail along the St Joe River but has no loading dock. There is a hitching rail on a loop near the entrance. The road in is narrow and rough. I would not pull a large RV in here.
Campsites: There are 9 RV campsites each is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. The road and driveways are gravel. The weekend we were here the campground was almost empty. However, a regular camper told us that it was not unusual for the campground to be full most weekends all summer so you might want to arrive early.
Host on Site: No
Water: There is a hand pump equipped well for water. It is tested for bacteria each month during the summer.
Garbage Services: There is no garbage service so pack yours out with you.
Electricity Available: No
Restroom: There is a vault style outhouse which was fairly clean considering there is no camp host. It has a fiberglass style floor which feels like it might drop you in the vault although they have proved safe for many years. However, I don't like them.
Handicap Accessible: The outhouse is handicap accessible.
Firewood: None available for purchase at the campground.
Pets: Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash.
Picnic Area: You could certainly use a campsite for your picnic.
Recreation: Recreational activities include camping, fishing, hiking, trail riding, backpacking and photography.
Fishing: Fishing is available on the St Joe River and is one of the main attractions. Check the regulation here.
Boating: No
Swimming: No
Hiking: Check out the map of the area on our recreation page to the left. It shows a number of trails to hike. I wish I had more time, maybe later.
Wildlife: There are bear warnings including grizzly bear. We didn't see any big game but one could see deer, elk and possibly moose as well as bear, wolves and cougar.
Additional Camping Opportunities: We have reviews for these nearby campgrounds; Shadowy St Joe Campground, Huckleberry Campground, Upper Landing Picnic Area, Packsaddle Campground, Turner Flat Campground, Tin Can Flat Campground, Conrad Crossing Campgrounds, Fly Flat Campground, Beaver Creek Camp and Line Creek Stock Camp.
Phone service: None
Nearby Services: The nearest basic services and food stuffs would be at Avery, Idaho.
RV Dumping Site: There is a dump station at Upper Landing Picnic Area.
