Huckleberry Campground

Name: Huckleberry Campground

Huckleberry Campground is situated along the St Joe River on an old gravel bar. It has cottonwood, aspen, willows and a few pine trees scattered about the area. It is the most "developed" campground on the river and the only one to offer electrical hook-ups. Most sites have some grass which is mowed. The river offers activities such as tubing and fly fishing.

Campsites: There are 33 campsites each is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring and tent square. The roads and driveways are paved. Sites 1, 2, 20, 21, 22 , 25 and 26 are pull-through. 31-33 are group sites and the rest are back-in.

Host on Site: Yes, the host is in campsite 7.

Water: There is a pressurized water system with chlorinated water throughout the campground.

Garbage Services: Garbage service is available with recycling for plastic and aluminum.

Electricity Available: There is a single RV hookup with 30 amp service in 13 of the sites plus 50 amp service at sites #4-9. 14 campsites do not have electricity. 31, 32 and 33 (group sites) have 3 sets of 30 amp outlets in each campsite.

Restroom: There are 6 vault style outhouses, they were clean and well stocked with toilet paper.

Handicap Accessible: Huckleberry is rather handicap friendly. The outhouses are all handicap accessible and the roads and RV pads are paved.

Firewood: Firewood is available for purchase from the camp host.

Pets: Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash.

Picnic Area: Near each of the two entrances there is a small picnic area with four or five parking sites and two tables. There is also a horseshoe pit at each.

Recreation: Other than camping the primary activities here are fly fishing or rafting, canoing and tubing on the river. There are horseshoe pits available also. The Trail of the Hiawatha is not to far away for a days bike ride. Check out this company offering package deals. It is one of several.

Fishing: The St Joe River is known for it's fly fishing and there are other smaller streams in the area. Check the regulations and seasons here.

Boating: Floating, rafting and canoing are popular in the St Joe River.

Swimming: Not so much swimming, people float the river.

Wildlife: This area is known for its elk hunting but you are more likely to see a deer. There were no wildlife warning signs.

Additional Camping Opportunities: We have reviews for these other campgrounds on the St. Joe River; Shadowy St Joe Campground, Upper Landing Picnic Area, Packsaddle Campground, Turner Flat Campground, Tin Can Flat Campground, Conrad Crossing Campgrounds, Fly Flat Campground, Beaver Creek Camp, Line Creek Stock Camp and Spruce Tree Campground.

Phone service: We didn't get any cell service on our at phones but there is a pay phone in the campground.

Nearby Services: The nearest basic services and food stuffs would be at Avery, Idaho.

RV Dumping Site: The RV dump station is located near the "downstream" entrance and is obvious from the road. The fee to use the station is $5.

Don:

We've been coming here for years and it's one of our favorite spots. Beautiful country and the river is just a short walk away.

J Cenis:

Loved this spot for years but problems this year. Four RV's were parked in the choice river view sites but not occupied for the four days we were in this campground. Rules state that site cannot be left unoccupied for more than 24 hrs. This is not fair to others who come to camp.

Rick:

What are the chances of a site being available September 8 and 9. Don't want to drive 4 hours to be turned away.
