Name: Packsaddle Campground
I loved Packsaddle Campground! It is very small with only 2 campsites. The driveways are paved and the sites are grassy. The river is wide and shallow here. It would be great waking up to the sound of it as it flows past the camp. The area is mountainous and covered with a mature forest. One word of warning about Packsaddle Campground, your peace may be broken often as this is a popular river access point.
Campsites: There are only 2 RV / tent campsites but both are set right on the river. Each has a picnic table and fire ring. The driveways are paved and the sites are grassy.
Host on Site: No
Water: There is a hand pump equipped well for camp water at Turner Flat Campground.
Garbage Services: No, pack your garbage out with you.
Electricity Available: No
Restroom: There is a vault style outhouse for your use and it was fairly clean and well stocked at the time of our visit.
Handicap Accessible: The outhouse is handicap accessible.
Firewood: There is no firewood for sale here. You will need to provide your own.
Pets: Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash.
Picnic Area: There is no picnic area here.
Recreation: Camping, fishing and playing in the river are the main recreational activities here. However, there is also backpacking, hiking and the Trail of the Hiawatha is not too far away for a days bike ride. Check out this company offering package deals. It is one of several.
Fishing: Fishing is available in the St Joe River. Check the regulation and seasons here.
Boating: There are rapids scattered along this stretch of the river and we saw people floating, rafting and kayaking here.
Swimming: The river is a bit shallow at the campground but I am sure one could find a better spot to swim nearby.
Wildlife: We didn't see any wildlife but one could expect deer, elk, black bear and grizzly bear to live in these mountains. There were warnings about how to store you food and garbage at Turner Flat just up the road. Use caution here as well to avoid troubles with bear.
Additional Camping Opportunities: We have reviews for these other campgrounds on the St. Joe River; Shadowy St Joe Campground, Huckleberry Campground, Upper Landing Picnic Area, Turner Flat Campground, Tin Can Flat Campground, Conrad Crossing Campgrounds, Fly Flat Campground, Beaver Creek Camp, Line Creek Stock Camp and Spruce Tree Campground.
