Name: Sheep Trail Campground
Sheep Trail Campground is on the south side of Hwy 21 NW of Stanley, Idaho. The campground is set back from the highway about 150 yards in the trees. A small stream meanders by the east side of camp and the forest provides ample shade though there is little privacy. This is a pleasant setting and I would camp here. This campground is designed as a "group" site.
Campsites: There are 4 individual tent / RV camping sites. #4 is in the middle with an extra large picnic table while the other 3 are arranged around the outside of the paved loop. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with attached grill.
Host on Site: No.
Water: Potable water is available from a hand-pump equipped well. The water smelled metallic. I no longer taste the water.
Garbage Services: Garbage service is available in a bear resistant dumpster. Use it to avoid a night time visit by the neighborhood bear.
Electricity Available: No.
Restroom: There is a vault style outhouse which is handicap accessible and clean.
Handicap Accessible: This is considered a handicap accessible campground.
Firewood: There is a sign advertising firewood available for $6.00 per bundle. However, since there is not a host on site, I am not sure how you would get it.
Pets: Yes, pets are allowed on a leash only.
Picnic Area: None here.
Recreation: The primary recreation at Sheep Trail Campground is camping! This is a group site, so most people come here to camp together. In the area, one could fish, hike, mountain bike, horseback trail ride and exercise your skills at photography. The Sawtooth Mountains are the most photographed area in Idaho.
Fishing: There are several streams in the area such as Marsh Creek, Cape Horn Creek, and Beaver Creek. The Salmon River is only 10 miles from here. For lake fishing, check out Stanley Lake or the Cape Horn Lakes. For restrictions, check the regulations.
Boating: None here.
Swimming: There is no swimming at Sheep Trail Campground. However, there is a path leading from the back of the campground to a small stream where you could let your children play in its cool water.
Hiking: For a nice hike, check out our review of the hike to Martin and Kelly Lakes.
Wildlife: There are deer, elk, wolves, fox and many species of birds in the surrounding forest.
Additional Camping Opportunities: For other nearby campgrounds, check out our reviews of; Thatcher Creek, Trap Creek, Elk Creek, Stanley Lake, Lakeview, Inlet and Iron Creek campgrounds. If you like primitive free camping, there are many sites available in the woods south of Hwy 21 throughout this area.
Phone service: The nearest pay phone is at Stanley, and you will pick up cell reception just before entering the town.
Nearby Services: For ice, pop, gas, propane, and food, take a trip to Stanley just 9 miles away. The view of the Sawtooth Mountains from Stanley is outstanding, so find an excuse to drive over!
RV Dumping Site: There is a dumping station just south of Stanley.
Location/Driving instructions: From Stanley, Idaho, take Hwy 21 NW 9.1 miles. Sheep Trail Campground will be on the south side of the road about 150 yards off the highway in the trees.

Fees And Reservations: Sheep Trail Campground is reservable as a group site. Most summer weekends are booked so reserve early at recreation. gov. The fee seems to be in question. The info at the campground says $45.00 per day for the "group" while the fee ranges from $37.04 to $41.67 at recreation.gov. If the campground is not reserved when you wish to stay, the individual sites rent for $13.00 per day and an extra $5.00 per day for your extra vehicle.
