Benewah Campground

Name: Benewah Campground

Benewah Campground is part of Heyburn State Park. It is located on Benewah Lake on the east end of the park. The campground is located on rolling hills on the shore of Benewah Lake. There are 15 newly remodeled campsites and 20 plus small older campsites. The older sites are on the lake shore and there is a dock for fishing or swimming. The mature forest has a fair bit of undergrowth mixed in. I saw a trail to hike along the lake and there is a boat launch for your use.

Campsites: There are 15 newly remodeled sites which offer water and electricity and part of them have sewer also. These campsites have paved roads and driveways with new picnic tables and firepits with attached grates. Campsites 216 through 239 are small and are equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. These campsites are very, very small and some are very close to each other. The road and driveways for them are dirt.

Host on Site: Yes

Water: There is pressurized water at the new sites and it is available for campers at the older part.

Garbage Services: Garbage service is available.

Electricity Available: All of the new sites have 50 amp service available.

Restroom: The restroom and shower facilities were brand new at the time of our visit. See the pictures on the Restrooms Showers page.

Handicap Accessible: The new part of the campground is very handicap accessible including the restrooms and showers.

Firewood: Firewood is available from the camp host. The fee in 2013 was $5 per bundle, it's probably more now.

Pets: Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash.

Picnic Area: There is a picnic area which you pass on your way to the campground.

Recreation: At the campground the main recreation is just camping, of course, fishing in the lake is popular and there is a boat launch if you want to get out on the lake. We also noticed kids swimming and playing on the dock in the older part of the campground. We saw one trail to hike on. If you are willing to travel a bit, Rocky Point Day Use Area has a great beach, There are trails in the main section of the Park not far from the Parks Visitors Infomation Center. Also the Trail of the Coeur dA'lene goes through the park and one can make arrangements to spend a day biking the trail.

Fishing: The lake is available from the shore or by boat. Check out the regulations here.

Boating: There is a boat launch and dock in Benewah Campground.

Swimming: We saw a dock on the point in the older part of the campground and there were a few kids swimming from it. Also Rocky Point Day Area has a great beach and is only a short drive away.

Wildlife: Deer, moose and black bear are common in this area.

Additional Camping Opportunities: We have reviews for these nearby campgrounds; Shadowy St Joe Campground, Hawley's Landing Campground and Chatcolet Campground. These last two are part of Heyburn State Park.

Phone service: We had service for our at phones but it was a bit shaky.
