Name: Woodhead Park
Woodhead Park is an Idaho Power recreational facility located on Brownlee Reservoir a few miles above Brownlee Dam. Woodhead Park was built in 1959, remodeled and expanded in 1995. The park was named for Ed Woodhead, the chief engineer in the construction of Brownlee Dam. Woodhead Park Campground is situated across a few rolling hills on the Idaho side of Brownlee Reservoir. The mountains on both sides tower over the park. They are dirt covered, not the rocky, cliff covered slopes you will find deeper in Hells Canyon. Fishing, camping, water sports, and wildlife watching are the main attractions in this area. If you drive down to Oxbow Reservoir, check out the reflections on the water. I have a picture of the reflections in my review of McCormick Park.
Campsites: There are 124 RV camping sites that include water, a fire pit, electricity, and a picnic table. There are also 15 tent sites with water, fire pits and picnic tables. Picnic areas are located throughout the park as well as a group shelter or two. To arrange for a group to use one of these shelters, please call 208-388-2231 M - F 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST.
Host on Site: There are multiple hosts in Woodhead Park.
Water: Woodhead Park has a pressurized water system and most campsites have it available.
Garbage Services: There are garbage dumpsters by the restrooms and a couple more locations.
Electricity Available: Electricity is available both 15 amp and 30 amp.
Restroom: Restrooms are flushing and very well kept.
Handicap Accessible: Woodhead Park is handicap accessible.
Pets: I can't find policy regarding pets. However, we visited the fall of 2016 and brought our small dog. We kept him on a leash but took him everywhere. Make sure to dispose of your pets droppings.
Picnic Area: Woodhead Park has a big beautiful picnic area which you access from a separate entrance from the highway.
Fishing: Fishing in Brownlee Reservoir includes many species of fish. Bass, crappie, bluegill and trout are a few favorites. Brownlee Reservoir is one of the best fisheries for crappie and bass in the state of Idaho. I personally know of several people that have returned home with a cooler full of crappie. For Idaho fishing regulations see our fishing page.
Boating: There are two boat ramps for accessing the reservoir. These are both in the same area and have a large boat parking area. The fish cleaning facility is located by the restrooms at the boat ramps here in Woodhead Park. People use the reservoir for fishing, boating , skiing...just plain having fun on the water.
Hiking: There are some trails on the hills above Loop D. Terri and I hiked them a two or three times as well as the paved trails and roadways throughout the park.
Wildlife: If you enjoy wildlife, there is an abundance of opportunities for your enjoyment. On my drive to Woodhead Park, I saw flocks of turkey, 3 elk, 6 deer, 6 bighorn sheep, 2 bald eagles, as well as numerous ducks and geese. I am sure there are many more species to enjoy. A note of caution, rattlesnakes do inhabit Hells Canyon!
Additional Camping Opportunities: McCormick Park, Hells Canyon Park and several undeveloped sites scattered along the shore. The Oregon side also offers a number of sites not included in this review.
Phone service: Public pay phones are available in Woodhead Park. However, I had no reception on my AT&T phone. We were able to get WiFi at times through the park.
Nearby Services: There is a store located just 3 miles away. You pass it coming in.
RV Dumping Site: An RV dump station is conveniently located for use at the exit of Woodhead Park.
Nearest Shower: There are showers available in the park.
Location/Driving instructions: From Cambridge, Idaho, turn west on Idaho 71 for about 28 miles until you reach the Hells Canyon area, then watch for the sign.
