Name: Whoop-um-up Campground
Whoop-um-up Campground is located on Highway 21 north of Idaho City on the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Route. It is named for Whoop-um-up Creek which passes beside it. Since it is the location of Whoop-um-up National Recreation Trailhead, it serves both the summer equestrian campers with a campground and the winter snowmobilers who also use the trail. The first time we camped here, Edna Creek Campground was full and the park host recommended this campground. We thought it was quite nice, and you don't have to have horses to camp here. This is gold country so keep your eyes open as you hike or ride through many roads and trails for signs of the old Gold Rush days.
Campsites: There are 6 RV camping sites. These sites are equipped with a picnic table, lantern poles, fire pit and feedbunk. Each have an extra large parking area when compared to a standard campground. The Park-N-Ski area is located just above the campground.
Water: There is a separate stock water area. There is drinking water available by a newer hand-crank pump.
Garbage Services: Garbage service is available in "Bearwise" cans.
Restroom: One restroom is near the road, another is in the campground. Both are log style, vault/outhouses and were clean and well kept.
Handicap Accessible: The restrooms are handicap accessible.
Pets: Pets should be kept on a leash.
Recreation: The Whoop-um-up National RecreationTrail is the number one attraction. 6.6 miles of hiking, riding or skiing for all to enjoy all year round. There are many small roads and trails to hike or ride in the area with the ruined remains of the Gold Rush scattered throughout.
Fishing: Rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and brook trout can be found in Edna Creek and Crooked River.
Additional Camping Opportunities: We have reviews for these nearby campgrounds; Edna Creek Campground, Ten Mile Campground, and Bad Bear Campground.
