Phi Kappa Campground

Name: Phi Kappa Campground

Phi Kappa Campground is located along the Big Lost River in the Pioneer Mountains. The elevation at the campground is 7,450 feet so the nights will almost always be cool, but the days can be very warm. We were there about mid-day in July and it was warm and dry. This area is surrounded by very tall, rugged mountains like the Devil's Bedstead.

Campsites: There are 21 tent / RV camping sites in Phi Kappa Campground. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with an attached grill. The campground is natural with a dirt/gravel road and driveways, and it is well forested with mature trees.

Host on Site: No.

Water: Potable water is available from a hand-pump equipped well.

Garbage Services: No.

Electricity Available: No.

Restroom: There is one older vault style outhouse which was fairly clean and well deodorized. There were 6 air fresheners hanging in it!

Handicap Accessible: The outhouse is handicap accessible.

Firewood: There is no firewood for sale. You will need to gather your own.

Pets: Pets are allowed but must be on a leash.

Picnic Area: There is no picnic area but the sites are only $5.00 per day.

Recreation: There is camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking and horseback riding on the trails in mountains around.

Fishing: The Big Lost River is one of the premier trout fishing streams in Idaho.

Boating: No.

Swimming: No.

Wildlife: This is wild country so one could see deer, elk, coyotes, fox, bear or wolves. There are moose over in Trail Creek.

Additional Camping Opportunities: We have reviews for these nearby campgrounds; Garden Creek Recreation Site, Park Creek Campground(PM) and Boundary Campground. There are many free primitive camp sites throughout this area.

Phone service: We received cell phone service on our ATT phones at the pass at the head of Trail Creek to the west. For pay phones, you could travel to MacKay, Idaho, to the east or Sun Valley or Ketchum, Idaho, to the west.

Nearby Services: If you run low on supplies such as ice, pop and food, I would choose to drive to Sun Valley because the views along the way are very impressive. My pictures don't capture the true grandeur and beauty of the mountains along the way.

RV Dumping Site: There is a RV dumping station north of Ketchum. Turn right at the Sawtooth NRA Visitors Center where you will find a large meadow just past the Visitors Center. The dumping station is in the middle of the meadow and is marked as such.

Location/Driving instructions: From Sun Valley, Idaho, take Sun Valley Road / Trail Creek Road east 14.3 miles from the east edge of town. Phi Kappa Campground will be on your right.
