Iron Creek Campground

Name: Iron Creek Campground

Iron Creek Campground sets along Iron Creek which is south of Stanley, Idaho, just inside the Sawtooth Mountains. The campground is on the flat beside the creek in a mature forest with underbrush and grass providing a shaded, natural setting. The mountains to the south loom overhead inviting some and threatening others. If you are one of those feeling the invitation, the trail leading south into the Sawtooth Wilderness Area is available from the trailhead next to Iron Creek Campground.

Campsites: There are 10 camping sites. 7 through 10 had been flooded and were unusable while we were there. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a grill. Most of these sites are small and I would not recommend a large RV.

Host on Site: No.

Water: Potable water is available from a hand-pump equipped well.

Garbage Services: Garbage service is available in Iron Creek Campground. I recommend you use it and use caution with your food storage to avoid a problem with bears.

Electricity Available: No.

Restroom: There is a vault style outhouse, which is clean and well stocked.

Handicap Accessible: No.

Firewood: No firewood for sale here so you will need to provide your own.

Pets: As usual, pets are allowed on a leash.

Picnic Area: There is a small picnic area at the trailhead.

Recreation: The primary recreation from Iron Creek Campground is backpacking into some of the most beautiful areas in Idaho. Photography is a very popular activity here.

Fishing: Iron Creek is very small, but if you are willing to work for it, there are some beautiful lakes in the Sawtooth Mountains you can hike to. Check the regulations for local restrictions.

Boating: No.

Swimming: No.

Wildlife: Deer, elk, bear, fox, wolves and mountain goats live here plus many species of birds. Even though there are many campers and hikers in the area, this is wild country and seeing wildlife is common.

Additional Camping Opportunities: Check out our reviews of several nearby campgrounds; Stanley Lake, Lakeview, Inlet and the Redfish Lake Area campgrounds. Also, there is an area along Iron Creek Road that offers free primitive camping. There are several large fire boxes scattered about this area.

Phone service: Phone service is available in Stanley, both cell service and pay phone.

Nearby Services: Stanley is the place to find any of the camping supplies you find yourself needing such as ice, pop, propane, gas or food.

RV Dumping Site: There is an RV dumping station just south of Stanley, Idaho.

Location/Driving instructions: From Stanley, Idaho, travel 2.2 miles NW on Hwy 21 to Iron Creek Road on your left. Turn onto Iron Creek Road and follow it to Iron Creek Campground about 2.9 miles.

Jim Bigelow:

Stayed 4 nights just after the 4th of July 2017. All the sites were open. The weather was good, but the mosquitoes terrible. We had to apply lots and lots of bug repellent just to slow them down. The fee is now $16/night. Otherwise a very nice spot. 3 out of 5 stars because of the bugs.
