Reviewed March 2026
Bruneau Dunes State Park has North America's tallest single-structured sand dune rising approximately 470 feet high. This site was chosen to house Idaho's largest public observatory primarily due to its very dark skies. The Observatory is open to the public on specific Friday and Saturday evenings March through October as long as you pay your day use fee ($7) which can be purchased at the Visitors center. Check the observatory schedule here. This area is popular for bird watching. No vehicles are allowed on the Dunes, but climbers are welcome. There is a visitor center at the park. There are two separate campgrounds at the state park, Broken Wheel Campground and Eagle Cove Campground.
