Hazard Lake Campground

Name: Hazard Lake Campground

Hazard Lake Campground is located on the shore of Hazard Lake. This is a high mountain lake, elevation 7060 feet. There are three lakes, Big Hazard, Hazard and Upper Hazard. We have not visited Upper Hazard. I understand it is a small lake but makes a great day hike from the trailhead at Hazard Lake. Hazard Lake area was burned a few years ago so miles of mature trees are mostly gone. The campground itself was spared, but most of the surroundings are covered with standing dead trees and new growth. Even so, I love this area.

Campsites: There are 12 RV camping sites. Each is equipped with a picnic table and fire pit with grill.

Water: There is drinking water available by a hand pump well. This water was clean and clear.

Garbage Services: I do not remember if garbage service is available, I believe we packed it out.

Restroom: The restroom is a vault/outhouse style facility. We found it to be clean and well maintained.

Handicap Accessible: This campground is handicap accessible including the picnic tables.

Pets: Welcome here!

Recreation: Bring your camera for the scenery and wildlife shots. If you like biking, you will love this area. We fished in Hazard and Big Hazard with good success at Hazard Lake. We used worms and a bobber; you have to be quick! Rainbow and brook trout were both biting. This area has many hiking and riding trails which lead to other beautiful high mountain lakes. I have been fishing at Twin Lakes and caught only brook trout. From Twin Lakes the hike to Tea Cup Lake is quite strenuous. Be prepared if you want to hike that far.

Boating: Canoes and float tubes are the preferred boating choices. No boat dock or ramp.

Phone service: There is no phone service available and our ATT cell phones had no reception.

Nearby Services: Nearest services are at McCall, Idaho, so fill up your gas there!

Location/Driving instructions: From McCall, take highway 55 north toward New Meadows. Four miles from McCall on Highway 55, take the turn off the highway on Forest road 257 to Brundage Mountain Ski Area. There is a large sign on the highway with directions to Brundage Ski Area, Goose Lake and Hazard Lake. Travel up 257, past the ski area, where the road then turns to gravel. Travel past Goose Lake and up to Hazard Lake. The road is graveled and narrow in places.

Nora B Smith:

My family camped at Hazard in the middle 40's, driving from Colorado and stayed until the first frost. It was a fantastic experience. I was probably 4years.
We had two large tents and my dad built a raft which we mothered through the Lily pads to the Lake for marvelous fishing. We often hiked to upper Hazard for a picnic, but didn't fish as the lily pads were so thick. It was a wonderful way to grow.
